Employer description
Senior Finance / Grant Accountant
Our client is one of the largest, most respected, and long-standing social service non-profit institutions in New York City. Operating as a critical cornerstone within the local human services landscape, the organization provides high-impact relief to hundreds of thousands of individuals and families each year. Its broad spectrum of services includes 100% affordable housing across dozens of locations, emergency food distribution, family violence intervention, senior care, and crisis support. Backed by a strong infrastructure and a disciplined, values-driven approach, the organization is widely recognized for its operational stability, scale, and unwavering commitment to community impact.
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and partnering closely with the Controller and Director of Grants & Budget, the Senior Finance / Grant Accountant plays a pivotal role in driving the day-to-day operations and strategic priorities of the Fiscal Department.
This is an influential, multi-faceted role designed for a seasoned finance professional who can fluidly move between hands-on technical accounting and high-level project management. The individual will take ownership of a complex portfolio of government grants, private foundation funding, and third-party billing—including Social Care Network (SCN) and Medicaid Redesign revenue cycle operations. Beyond core accounting, this position serves as a trusted partner to the executive team, driving cross-functional initiatives, managing key fiscal deadlines, and translating complex financial data for department leaders across the agency.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Accounting & Revenue Cycle Operations (70% – 80%)
- Grant & Contract Management: Prepare and review timely, accurate financial reports and claims for government funders (e.g., NYC DFTA, DYCD, NYS OTDA), private foundations, and capital project grants.
- Medicaid & SCN Revenue Cycle: Oversee Medicaid Redesign and Social Care Network (SCN) billing operations, including claim submissions, eligibility verifications, denial management, reconciliations, and reporting.
- General Ledger & Close: Review journal entries, cost allocations, and monthly books closing to ensure full compliance with GAAP, OMB Uniform Guidance, and internal controls.
- Compliance & Audits: Maintain strict adherence to funder requirements, partner with external auditors, and support annual audit preparation.
- Stakeholder Relations: Serve as the primary fiscal point of contact for external funders, program directors, and internal department heads regarding grant performance and billing inquiries.
Strategic Initiatives & Executive Support (20% – 30%)
- Executive Partnership: Assist the CFO and fiscal leadership in executing strategic priorities and maintaining the department's master calendar of deadlines.
- Special Projects & Projections: Lead cross-departmental financial projects, draft budget projections, and prepare executive-level reporting packages for C-suite decision-making.
- Process Improvement: Continuously refine accounting workflows, revenue cycle processes, and reporting systems to support organizational growth and efficiency.
Qualifications & Competencies
- Experience: 6–8+ years of progressive grant accounting and/or nonprofit finance experience required.
- Technical Expertise:
- Direct experience managing complex portfolios of NYC/NYS government grants and private foundation funding.
- Hands-on experience with SCN billing, revenue cycle management, and eMedNY / SCN Managed Care systems.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs, nested IF logic) and financial reporting tools.
- Familiarity with PASSPort, Grants Gateway, and OMB Uniform Guidance strongly preferred.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business required.
- Leadership & Soft Skills:
- Proven ability to act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership while handling sensitive financial matters with discretion.
- Strong critical thinking and project management skills, with a knack for explaining complex budgets to non-finance staff.
- Adaptable, collaborative, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary: $125,000 – $135,000 per year
- Work Schedule: Full-time hybrid model with an early Friday finish (office closes at 2:00 PM)
- Time Off: Generous vacation and sick leave, plus paid holidays—including multiple observed religious/cultural holidays
- Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, FSA, and life insurance
- Retirement & Extras: 403(b) retirement plan with employer contribution; pre-tax commuter benefits
- Career Advancement: Direct visibility to the CFO and executive team with long-term internal growth potential within a highly stable institution
