Job Description
The Opportunity
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s College of Engineering invites applications for an Aerospace Engineering Research Engineer to support faculty and student research within the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Daytona Beach Campus. This hands-on position plays an important role in the safe and effective operation of aerospace laboratories, workshops, and wind-tunnel facilities while helping researchers transform ideas into working experimental systems.
The successful candidate will combine strong engineering fundamentals with practical fabrication, computer-aided design, laboratory operations, and safety expertise. The role regularly collaborates with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, researchers, university partners, and external scientists and engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and support instructional, research, student-project, demonstration, and tour activities in aerospace laboratories, workshops, and wind-tunnel facilities.
- Assess requests for laboratory and shop use, advise on feasibility and potential modifications, and maintain a master schedule for shared facilities.
- Support aerospace engineering faculty and students in designing, building, modifying, and troubleshooting experimental apparatus and research equipment.
- Use computer-aided design and engineering tools to create parts, assemblies, drawings, simulations, and laboratory experiments.
- Perform machining, woodworking, welding, painting, plumbing, and sheet-metal fabrication as needed to support research and instruction.
- Train and guide students in the safe use of laboratory, machine-shop, and wind-tunnel equipment; provide design and manufacturability guidance.
- Maintain, inspect, and repair a broad range of laboratory equipment, machines, instrumentation, and facilities; coordinate outside repair or installation work when needed.
- Maintain equipment and supply inventories and assist with purchasing, specifications, installation planning, documentation, and budget-related activities.
- Serve as a safety advocate by implementing and reinforcing University and applicable occupational safety procedures, maintaining safety documentation, and identifying potential hazards.
- Assist with classes, laboratories, tours, and other training activities, and remain current through relevant conferences, training, and professional development.
