Position Summary
The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the Meat Department. This position helps maintain excellent customer service, high-quality products, proper merchandising, food safety, associate performance, and department cleanliness while supporting sales and shrink goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Meat Manager with the overall operation and performance of the Meat Department.
- Provide friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient customer service.
- Support, coach, and train Meat Department associates to ensure consistent execution of department standards.
- Help assign daily tasks and follow up with associates to ensure responsibilities are completed.
- Maintain proper product levels through ordering, receiving, stocking, rotating, and merchandising.
- Ensure meat cases and displays are full, fresh, organized, properly signed, and visually appealing.
- Monitor product quality, freshness, rotation, and expiration dates to maintain high standards and reduce shrink.
- Assist with inventory management, controlling shrink, and meeting department sales and profitability goals.
- Follow proper procedures for cutting, preparing, wrapping, weighing, labeling, pricing, and displaying meat products.
- Ensure advertised and promotional products are properly stocked, displayed, and signed.
- Maintain accurate pricing and product labeling throughout the department.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas, coolers, freezers, cases, storage areas, and equipment.
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, health, and workplace safety requirements.
- Ensure associates follow proper food-handling procedures and safely operate department tools and equipment.
- Monitor department conditions throughout the shift and respond to customer and operational needs.
- Assist with opening and closing department responsibilities as assigned.
- Step into the Meat Manager's leadership responsibilities when the Meat Manager is unavailable.
- Communicate staffing needs, product concerns, inventory issues, and operational opportunities to store leadership.
- Support other areas of the store as needed and contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment.
Leadership Expectations
- Lead by example and maintain a professional and positive attitude.
- Provide associates with clear direction, expectations, and follow-up.
- Help develop associates through training, coaching, and ongoing feedback.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, urgency, and excellent customer service.
- Maintain high department standards throughout the entire shift.
- Help identify opportunities to improve sales, merchandising, product quality, and shrink.
- Respond to customer concerns professionally and work toward quick and appropriate resolutions.
Qualifications
- Previous retail, grocery, meat department, or related experience preferred.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Knowledge of meat products, merchandising, sanitation, rotation, and food safety practices preferred.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Must be dependable, organized, and able to demonstrate good judgment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, reach, squat, push, pull, and perform repetitive motions.
- Ability to lift and move meat products, boxes, supplies, and equipment as required.
- Ability to work in refrigerated, cooler, and freezer environments.
- Ability to safely operate department tools and equipment after receiving appropriate training.
