POSITION SUMMARY

Plans, conducts, and reports on experimental test flights as Pilot-In-Command to meet test plan objectives. Additionally, will plan and conduct production flight test missions to ensure aircraft meet the specification of approved type design. Identifies and documents flight deficiencies and coordinates resolution. Plans, coordinates and conducts delivery, ferry, support and functional test flights on production and non-production aircraft. Job requires formal flight test training and FAA ATP or commercial certificate privileges.

JOB RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Operate various models of test aircraft for experimental test, test support, and production acceptance flights through specifically prescribed tests and maneuvers.
  • Subject matter expert for flight test activities to include safety planning, test planning, test card development, test execution and reporting.
  • Develop, in conjunction with engineering, flight test programs for modified aircraft to validate design, aerodynamics, systems performance, flight characteristics.
  • Develop flight test plans to include objectives, success criteria, data collect methodology, flight test techniques, and evaluation criteria to ensure certification or qualification of the aircraft or aircraft systems.
  • Assist with safety planning to include development of hazard analyses, mitigating procedures, and corrective actions for low, medium, and high-risk testing.
  • Participate in design reviews to provide inputs regarding suitability of aircraft or aircraft systems for stated mission or requirements.
  • Write technical and flight reports to document the results of the flight test activity.
  • Provide input for developing and modifying flight manuals and related documents based on test results.
  • Analyze, interpret and distribute flight test results.
  • Monitor flight operations to ensure compliance with FAA regulations and flight safety requirements.
  • Travel to support company and customer requirements, including customer delivery, ferry and in field maintenance and/or test flights.
  • Coordinate the activities of flight operations with FAA, other government agencies, Engineering, Accounting, Manufacturing and other Embraer departments.
  • This position description is not intended to be all-inclusive, and employee will also perform other tasks as assigned.
  • Mentor other department pilots and flight test engineers.
  • Serves as a Pilot-In-Command on aircraft on which he/she holds the appropriate ratings.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in aeronautical engineering or other engineering discipline preferred
  • Recognized Test Pilot School Graduate required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of flight test experience is required.
  • Minimum of 2500 hours of flight time required
  • Minimum of 1500 hours of PIC time required
  • Military flight test experience desired.
  • Experience flying multiple type aircraft is highly desired.
  • Production flight test or functional check flight experience highly desired.
  • Experience or qualification in the Phenom 100/300 (EMB-500/EMB-505), Legacy 450/500 (EMB-550) or other Embraer aircraft is desired.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to plan, execute and analyze flight test missions on new and highly modified aircraft.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate test aircraft using flight test techniques to gather data required to evaluate aircraft or systems for stated objectives.
  • Extensive knowledge of flight testing to include performance, flying qualities, and system analysis.
  • Extensive specialized knowledge of weight and balance calculations, navigation procedures, airspace, meteorology, aircraft performance data, communication operations, flight planning, industry regulations, and crew resource management (CRM).
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and precisely document aircraft problems found during flight test procedures. Must also be able to verbally describe the discrepancies to engineering and maintenance personnel responsible for correcting the problems.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Must work well in a team environment.
  • Must be able to work independently to solve complex problems.
  • Ability to read and understand aircraft technical manuals and reports.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office or similar software.
  • Ability to interpret and comprehend manufacturer, FAA, Department of Defense or other government requirements and specifications.
  • Ability to test fly new planes as they come off the production assembly line.
  • The Experimental Test Pilot candidate must be a highly skilled individual and will have undergone in-depth training in numerous aircraft platforms and systems.

Working Conditions / Environment / Special Requirements:

  • Airline Transport Pilot or commercial privileges (or higher) is required.
  • Individual must be in sufficient physical condition to obtain at least an FAA First- or Second-class physical.
  • Travel (domestic and international) will be required for certification, qualification, recurrent training, and job taskings.
  • Work includes operations in and around operating aircraft.
  • Individual must be able to conduct their duties inflight during aircraft maneuvering and during time critical flight test events.
  • Ability to work in a safe, professional manner adhering to all regulatory requirements including OSHA, EPA, State and Federal regulations.
  • Must have the ability to wear an aircraft oxygen mask with no restrictions that would prevent the proper use and/or seal of the mask.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and different shifts (when required).
  • Employees will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing under FAA regulations.
