Job Summary:

The Project and Revenue Accounting Manager leads project accounting and revenue recognition for the business, with primary accountability for accurate and timely application of ASC 606, Revenue from Contracts with Customers in accordance with Network Connex corporate accounting policies. Reporting to the NTI Vice President of Finance, this manager ensures proper revenue recognition and reporting, strong project financial visibility, effective internal controls, and supports a timely month-end close. The role partners with Financial Controllership, Operations, Project Management, Legal, Sales, and Finance; serve as a key resource to support audits and leads the development of project accounting staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Revenue Recognition and Technical Accounting

  • Own the application of ASC 606 to existing, new, and modified customer arrangements, including the determination of performance obligation, transaction price and its allocation, impact from contract modifications, and the timing of revenue recognition.
  • Review contracts, amendments, change orders, claims, incentives, penalties, and other variable considerations; prepare clear, well-supported accounting conclusions and obtain required approvals.
  • Prepare ASC 606 templates and supporting schedules for significant or non-standard arrangements and judgmental matters.

Project Accounting and Month-end Close

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual revenue close for project-based accounting, in cooperation with the project controls team and PMO, ensuring revenue, cost, margin, contract asset and liability, and related balances are accurate, complete, and supportable.
  • Review and approve project setup and maintenance in NetSuite and related systems, including contract values, billing terms, revenue rules, budgets, cost codes, project status, and closeout requirements.
  • Monitor estimates at completion, forecasted costs, project progress, backlog, committed costs, and gross margin trends; investigate significant changes and ensure estimates are updated timely.
  • Reconcile project subledgers and supporting schedules to the general ledger, including contract assets, contract liabilities, retainage, accrued project costs, and revenue reserves.
  • Prepare revenue and project accounting journal entries, account reconciliations, roll forwards, analytics, and management reporting.

Business Partnership and Reporting

  • Partner with Project Managers, PMO, and Operations leaders to conduct project financial reviews, validate cost forecasts, resolve accounting issues, and improve visibility into project performance.

Controls, Audit, and Process Improvement

  • Enforce project accounting and revenue recognition policies, procedures, controls, and documentation in accordance with U.S. GAAP and corporate policies.
  • Serve as the primary project revenue accounting contact for internal and external audits, including audit support, contract samples, control evidence, and responses to inquiries.
  • Identify and implement process, reporting, and system improvements that increase month-end close efficiency, data quality, control effectiveness, and scalability.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop project accounting staff; establish priorities, review work, clarify accountability, and promote consistent execution across projects and business stakeholders.
  • Perform other accounting and finance responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including demonstrated expertise in ASC 606 and project accounting.
  • Ability to interpret complex contractual terms and translate them into clear accounting conclusions, operational requirements, and controls.
  • Demonstrated strong experience and understanding of project-based accounting, including long-term and project-based contracts, estimates at completion, measures of progress, contract modifications, variable consideration, contract assets, and contract liabilities.
  • Ability to support month-end close and preparation or review of journal entries, reconciliations, roll forwards, financial analyses, and management reporting.
  • Strong analytical judgment, including the ability to identify project performance trends, explain margin movements, resolve data issues, and exercise appropriate professional skepticism.
  • Knowledge of ERP, project management, billing, and reporting systems and the flow of data between operational subledgers and the general ledger.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookup and logical formulas, data analysis, and reconciliation of large data sets.
  • Ability to lead and develop a team, manage competing priorities, and meet recurring deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clear, credible communication skills and the ability to collaborate with Operations, Project Management, Legal, Sales, Finance, auditors, and executive leadership.
  • High integrity, attention to detail, and a commitment to accurate, well-supported accounting and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • At least five years of progressive accounting experience, including substantive responsibility for revenue recognition, project accounting, and the financial close.
  • Demonstrated experience applying ASC 606 to complex customer contracts and documenting technical accounting conclusions.
  • Experience reviewing work, leading process improvements, or developing accounting team members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or CMA certification.
  • Public accounting experience.
  • Experience in construction, telecommunications infrastructure, data-center infrastructure, engineering, or another project-based services environment.
  • Experience with NetSuite or a comparable project-based ERP.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment and requires extended periods of computer use and seated work.
  • Occasional movement of materials weighing up to 25 pounds may be required.
