The Opportunity

Aviva Canada has an exciting opportunity within our Aviva Business division for an Auto Underwriter to join our Atlantic Branch. We are open to candidates at both the Intermediate and Senior Underwriter levels.
In this role, you'll manage a portfolio of commercial automobile fleet business, making sound underwriting decisions that drive profitable growth while delivering exceptional service to our broker partners. This is an opportunity to join a high-performing team where you'll leverage your technical expertise, market knowledge, and relationship-building skills to make a meaningful impact on the business.
As a trusted underwriting partner, you'll work closely with brokers to identify opportunities, assess complex risks, negotiate solutions, and contribute to the continued success of Aviva's commercial auto portfolio.
What you’ll do
- Underwrite and manage a portfolio of new and renewal commercial automobile fleet business, exercising sound judgment within granted authority.
- Assess risk exposures, analyze financial and underwriting information, and determine appropriate pricing, terms, and coverage solutions.
- Apply underwriting expertise and market knowledge to support profitable portfolio growth.
- Collaborate with broker partners to identify new business opportunities and strengthen existing relationships.
- Negotiate coverage, pricing, and terms while balancing customer needs and business objectives.
- Utilize loss experience, risk management principles, and industry insights to guide underwriting decisions.
- Provide timely, responsive service to brokers while consistently meeting service level commitments.
- Support retention initiatives and proactively identify opportunities to improve portfolio performance.
- Monitor market trends, competitive activity, and emerging risks to inform underwriting strategy.
- Contribute to team success through knowledge sharing, collaboration, and continuous improvement initiatives.
What you’ll bring
- 3+ years of commercial automobile fleet underwriting experience, with consideration given to more experienced candidates at the Senior level.
- Strong technical underwriting and risk assessment capabilities.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong broker relationships.
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- A customer-focused mindset and a commitment to delivering outstanding service.
- Post-secondary education or an equivalent combination of education and industry experience.
- Experience with commercial underwriting systems and technology tools.
What makes you stand out
- CIP designation completed or actively pursuing.
- Demonstrated success managing commercial auto portfolios and delivering profitable results.
- Strong understanding of the Atlantic insurance market and broker distribution channel.
- Experience handling more complex fleet risks and negotiating tailored underwriting solutions.
