Employer description

The Company

It takes great people to achieve greatness. People with a sense of purpose and integrity. People with a relentless pursuit of excellence. People who care about making things better For Those Who Make The World™. Join our top-notch team of more than 43,000 high-performing professionals globally who are making their mark on some of the world’s most beloved brands, including DEWALT®, STANLEY, CRAFTSMAN, BLACK+DECKER, and other strong brands.

The Role

Stanley Black & Decker (NYSE: SWK) is seeking an Engineering Vice President, Power Tools North America to lead engineering for the company’s flagship DEWALT professional power tools business in North America. Reporting to the Engineering Leader of Americas/EMEA, this role will lead the Maryland Design Center — spanning Mechanical Engineering, Electronics/Electrical Engineering, Embedded Software, Industrial Design, Packaging Engineering, and Shared Services/CAE — approximately 450 engineers and engineering professionals.

The Maryland Design Center in Towson, MD is the engineering heart of Stanley Black & Decker’s global power tools business. It owns the design, development, factory introduction, and sustaining of the DEWALT professional power tool systems portfolio and provides technology and methodology leadership across mechanical, electrical, software, industrial design, platforming, program management, and computational analysis disciplines. The center is the primary engineering liaison with Category and Product Management, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing, and partners closely with engineering centers in Germany, Israel, Mexico, and Asia.

The VP Engineering, Maryland Design Center will build and lead a high-performing, integration-first engineering organization. The leader owns total product accountability across all North America programs, and develops the next generation of engineering leadership talent at Stanley Black & Decker.

This position is based at our Tools & Outdoor headquarters in Towson, Maryland.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Own total engineering delivery for the Towson Design Center. Serve as the single accountable leader for all cross-functional program execution — on time, on budget, and to quality specification — across the DEWALT professional power tools portfolio. This is a direct accountability, not a coordination role.
  • Drive new product development excellence. Partner with the commercial teams and to shape and execute a compelling NPD pipeline. Ensure programs are scoped and resourced for success from the outset, and that the organization delivers with the speed and quality DEWALT’s market position demands.
  • Own Towson engineering talent. Build a best-in-class engineering leadership team. Drive succession planning, high-potential identification, performance management, and capability building across all Towson engineering disciplines. Set expectations and hold leaders accountable for people development, not just program delivery.
  • Integrate across functions. Serve as the primary Towson engineering liaison with Global Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, and the Mexico engineering ecosystem. Ensure products are designed for manufacturability and that the Towson organization is a proactive, collaborative partner — not a downstream recipient — in the product creation process.
  • Champion platforming and design-to-value. Actively support the Chief Engineer community and the platform architecture mandate. Drive a Design-to-Value mindset across Towson programs, partnering with the Americas/EMEA Systems Engineering & Processes function to identify and pursue cost reduction, complexity reduction, and platform commonality opportunities.
  • Partner with the Systems Engineering & Processes Director to embed engineering process rigor and quality standards across Towson programs. The two leaders must operate as a unified leadership team on standards, gate discipline, and technical readiness expectations.
  • Shape the technology agenda for DEWALT professional power tools. Work alongside business leaders and the enterprise innovation team to ensure Towson is anticipating and integrating relevant technology trends — including electrification, embedded systems, connectivity, AI-assisted tools, and advanced materials — into the product development roadmap.
  • Manage engineering agility and productivity metrics. Own and improve Towson’s KPIs for development cycle time, first-pass quality, engineering productivity, and design-driven cost reduction. Connect structural and process changes directly to measurable business outcomes.
  • Build a high-performance engineering culture. Establish clear expectations, consistent accountability, and a culture that values both technical depth and cross-functional collaboration. Model the leadership behaviors required to attract, develop, and retain world-class engineering talent.

Candidate Profile

  • Senior engineering leadership experience at a design center, business unit, or enterprise level, ideally from a company known for engineering excellence in complex, electrified mechatronic products. Consumer power tools, automotive, appliances, or precision manufacturing backgrounds are highly relevant.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in engineering, product development, and technology leadership, including direct experience leading large, multidisciplinary engineering organizations (300+ people) in a design center or site leader capacity.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering cross-functional new product development programs — on time and to specification — across hardware (mechanical + electrical) and software-integrated products. The leader must be credible and accountable across all engineering disciplines, not just their functional background.
  • Deep familiarity with systems engineering principles, total tool or total product accountability, and the integration challenges that arise in complex electrified products. Experience implementing or maturing systems engineering capability in a product development organization is a strong differentiator.
  • Electrification, embedded systems, and platform engineering experience. The Towson portfolio is increasingly software-defined and platform-centric. The leader must understand these domains with sufficient depth to set direction, assess technical risk, and develop capability.
  • Significant platforming and modular architecture experience. The ability to drive reuse, reduce complexity, and establish platform discipline across a broad product portfolio is essential.
  • Proven people leader and talent developer. A track record of building high-performing engineering leadership teams, managing through multiple layers, driving succession, and developing technical talent into broader leadership roles. This leader must be as strong on the people dimension as on the technical and program dimensions.
  • Strong change leadership capability. The Towson organization is in transformation — the leader must be comfortable driving change, holding the line on expectations, and building commitment through clarity and credibility.
  • Cross-functional partnership skills. Able to operate as a peer to Product Management, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Marketing leadership — not as a service provider to them. Must bring a business perspective to the engineering agenda, not just a technical one.
  • Technical degree required; Masters or Ph.D. in Engineering preferred. MBA or equivalent business education is a meaningful differentiator. Professionally active in engineering societies, professional associations, or external networks.
  • Personal succession potential and genuine desire to build leadership capability for future roles at Stanley Black & Decker. This is a VP-level role with a clear path to expanded enterprise leadership responsibility.
