We are looking for an editor to lead Domain’s property news coverage and manage a small team of property journalists. This is a senior editorial role within Domain’s national news team, responsible for shaping, commissioning and publishing authoritative, engaging and timely property journalism.
You will have strong editorial judgment, deep news instincts, and a solid understanding of the Australian property market and broader economic landscape. Just as importantly, you will be an excellent people leader — someone who enjoys coaching journalists, sharpening ideas, and lifting the quality of the team’s output.
The national property news team covers everything from property data and market forecasting to interest rates and economic policy, housing affordability and social issues, major campaigns, luxury property stories, and breaking news. This role plays a key part in setting the agenda and ensuring coverage is smart, distinctive and audience focused.
Responsibilities
- Take pitches, brainstorm ideas and provide clear editorial direction and feedback
- Assign stories and brief reporters daily and weekly, including on breaking news
- Plan and manage the content workflow and content calendar
- Edit journalists’ copy to a high standard and provide feedback as required
- Jump in and write where/when required, to a high standard
- Stay across property trends, data, the economy and housing policy, identifying news opportunities
- Deep dive into data and reports to inform coverage and generate story ideas
- Track content performance metrics and make strategic editorial decisions based on audience insights
- Work collaboratively with other teams across the business, including video, social, SEO and magazine
- As a team, we work closely with editorial creators across the business and contribute to major campaigns and cross-platform initiatives.
About You
- Significant editorial experience in a newsroom environment
- Proven experience managing or leading journalists
- Strong news judgment and editing skills
- A sound understanding of the Australian property market and the economic forces that shape it
- Experience working with data and translating it into accessible journalism
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Ability to juggle breaking news with planned, longer-term coverage
Desirable:
- Experience in a digital-first newsroom
- Knowledge of SEO/AIO and audience analytics
- Experience working with newsletters, video or social teams
