Position Overview

LaneStaffing is seeking dependable and hardworking Refuse Collectors to support solid waste collection operations for the City of Laredo.

The Refuse Collector is responsible for collecting residential garbage, emptying refuse containers into collection vehicles, maintaining cleanliness around collection areas, and assisting with the safe and proper disposal of collected waste. This is a physically demanding, outdoor position that requires the ability to perform repetitive and strenuous work while following established safety procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collect residential garbage along assigned routes.
  • Empty refuse containers into the compactor of a garbage truck.
  • Operate hydraulic levers and related equipment located on the collection vehicle.
  • Inspect carts and containers for dirt, iron, wood, rocks, or other materials that could damage collection equipment.
  • Check sidewalks, curbs, and collection areas to ensure trash and debris have been removed.
  • Pick up loose trash and assist with street maintenance activities as required.
  • Follow established safety procedures when working around collection vehicles, machinery, equipment, traffic, and the public.
  • Assist with the proper handling and disposal of collected waste.
  • Maintain effective and professional communication with supervisors, coworkers, City staff, visitors, and other business contacts.
  • Follow directions and complete assigned routes and tasks efficiently.
  • Operate or assist with machinery, equipment, and tractors as assigned and authorized.
  • Drive a City vehicle for authorized City business as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The successful candidate should have or be able to develop knowledge of:

  • Basic machinery and equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Workplace and equipment safety practices.
  • Basic tractor operation.
  • Proper refuse collection and disposal procedures.

Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to:

  • Perform strenuous, repetitive, and routine physical work.
  • Lift and handle medium-weight objects as required by the position.
  • Work effectively in an outdoor and physically demanding environment.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions from supervisors.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Work cooperatively with supervisors, coworkers, City personnel, and the public.
  • Maintain good organizational and work habits.
  • Maintain a positive and professional image while representing the City of Laredo.
  • Comply with all applicable City of Laredo policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Maintain the health and physical condition necessary to perform the full duties of the position.
  • Communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing, and verbally in Spanish.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver License.
  • Applicants holding an out-of-state driver's license must obtain a Texas Driver License within six months of employment.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position.

Screening & Employment Requirements

Selected candidates will be required to successfully complete applicable pre-employment requirements established for the position, which may include:

  • Background screening.
  • Verification of required education or credentials, when applicable.
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
  • Random drug and alcohol testing when the position is classified as safety-sensitive.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position involves strenuous physical activity and outdoor field work associated with residential refuse collection. Employees must be physically capable of performing the essential duties of the position, including repetitive movement, lifting, handling refuse containers and materials, and working around collection vehicles and equipment.

Employees are expected to follow all safety procedures and maintain awareness of their surroundings while working around moving vehicles, equipment, traffic, and collection areas.
